Heritage and modern styles working as one.

Welcome to my blog.
I will be viewing how modern style homes can work together within a heritage style community without decreasing the aesthetics of the neighborhood. My area of research is going to be down-town West End of Kamloops.

Thesis Statement
How can modernist homes in Kamloops bring diversity to the west-end, while maintaining the heritage aesthetics of the neighborhood.

Revised Thesis Statement
How can Modernist style homes be introduced to the west-end of Kamloops, while respecting the heritage character of the neighborhood.

The Kamloops Museum offers heritage walking tours of the West End: http://www.kamloops.ca/museum/heritagewalkingtour.shtml
They are not offered until the summer, but if you are around this could be a good way to get a historian's perspective on the area. You could also drop in to the museum to see what you can dig up there.
also, post you planning outline so that others can comment on it.

Dwell Magazine has some great articles about modern houses in historic neighborhoods. See: http://www.dwell.com/homes/new/3052606.html
I think if you choose a particular site and post photos on your blog then people can comment on what they think you should do.

Mitch, I found this site:

http://www.architectureweek.com/topics/hp-01.html

it is about preserving historic buildings, I'm not sure if it will fit with your topic, but you may find something.

It would be really nice to see some photos of houses from the area you're planning on studying. They are mostly more heritage style, but maybe you could find some pictures of more modern looking houses from elsewhere that you think would work in the Kamloops area.

I think it's a really neat topic to write about. It would be interesting to see maybe some sketches or some more pictures as to the types of heritage buildings your lokking at updating. Here'a few links that may be helpful with your topic.

I was talking to my neighbor yesterday, who is also an architect and he is planning to build a modernist style home in the West End! I have his business card if you would like to contact him about this.
As I posted on Morgan's site, I would be willing to do a West end walking tour of my own for anyone who has a topic related to heritage homes. Perhaps we can discuss this in class today.

Mitch, if you're going to be comparing modern homes to heritage homes, you might want to check out this website about heritage homes in Vancouver. It's got a lot of useful links as well.

Mitch, thanks for the hit got any ideas about how I can narrow in on a specific point of this topic? On another note regarding your research,
I have construction experience within this sort of area, where rich clients would purchase old heritage buildings and restore them without taking away from the warm heritage estetics. I have a bunch of pictures of the construction phases of these projects.
You could use them for your Blog.

I will bring them in regardless, you can look through them at least
thanks for your help brother

One way to narrow your research is to define heritage, and to research how a different municipality would define it. Also you could look up Cliff Cunningham who managed to overcome resistance to modern homes in the heritage area of Shaughnessy. He will be giving a presentation in the next AIBC conference. What is modernist design? There is Marmol Radzinger who continues the California Case Study Modern Homes design using pre-fab. Also check out the forefather of that, Pierre Koenig.
